Airsoft Eye & Face Protection Standards Explained

"Airsoft rated" gets printed on a lot of eyewear packaging that has never touched a real testing lab. Since a face full of 6mm BBs at close range is not a hypothetical risk, it's worth knowing what the actual standards behind eye and face protection mean — and where a sticker is just marketing.

ANSI Z87.1: a floor, not a finish line

ANSI Z87.1 is the baseline American standard for industrial and occupational eye protection, and it's the certification you'll see most often on safety glasses and shooting eyewear sold in the US. Passing it means a lens has survived a defined high-mass or high-velocity impact test — a real, meaningful bar, and worth checking for on any eyewear you buy.

Where it gets murky is airsoft specifically. Z87.1 (and its higher-velocity Z87+ marking) tests against a steel ball at a set speed, but it doesn't test the things a skirmish actually throws at your face: sustained fire at close range, angled hits, or BBs finding the gap between a glasses frame and your cheek. That's exactly why most fields don't treat "Z87.1-rated glasses" as sufficient on their own — rules commonly call for full-seal goggles with a wraparound gasket, not open-frame glasses, plus a retention strap so a shot to the frame can't knock the whole thing off mid-game.

EN 166: the European equivalent

If you're shopping or playing in Europe, the standard you'll see instead is EN 166, the general European standard for personal eye protection. Class B under EN 166 corresponds to a mid-range mechanical impact rating that's commonly cited as the relevant tier for airsoft use. EN 166 has also started being superseded by the newer EN ISO 16321 standard in some markets, so don't be surprised to see both markings for a while as manufacturers transition.

As with Z87.1, a EN 166 rating on a lens tells you about the lens — it doesn't guarantee the frame seals against your face, or that the strap will hold under a hit. Read the whole product, not just the certification code.

Is there an airsoft-specific standard?

Yes — ASTM F2879 exists specifically for eye protection used in airsoft-type activities, rather than general industrial use. It's less commonly referenced in casual retail listings than ANSI or EN, but it's the one standard actually written with airsoft's specific hazard profile in mind, and worth looking for if you can find it on a product spec sheet.

Worth knowing: there's no single global body that sets one universal "the" airsoft eye-protection rule — requirements are set field-by-field and country-by-country. Always check the specific field's posted safety rules before you show up, rather than assuming any certification automatically clears you to play.

Mesh vs. polycarbonate: the real tradeoff

Mesh masks solve fogging almost completely — air moves freely, so a mesh lens rarely fogs the way a sealed hard lens can. The tradeoff is real: manufacturers and fields have documented BBs fragmenting on impact with metal mesh at close range, with fragments passing through the weave. That's why a meaningful number of fields restrict or ban mesh, especially for close-quarters/CQB formats, in favor of solid polycarbonate lenses.

Solid polycarbonate lenses avoid the fragmentation risk but bring fogging back into play, especially paired with a lower-face mask on a warm day — which is exactly the problem our anti-fog guide digs into if that's the tradeoff you land on.

What real fields actually require

Posted rules vary by venue, but a few patterns show up repeatedly at fields that publish their safety requirements: full-seal goggles (not open glasses) as a minimum, a retention strap, age-tiered requirements for younger players, and FPS (muzzle velocity) limits tied to engagement distance — the harder your gun hits, the more the field expects from your protection and the buffer distance you keep. None of this is universal, so "check the specific field's rules before you book" is the one instruction that holds everywhere.

Reading past the marketing

A product labeled "airsoft safe" or "airsoft rated" with no ANSI, EN, or ASTM certification number printed anywhere isn't automatically unsafe — but it also isn't automatically safe, and you have no independent way to check the claim. Look for an actual standard code on the product or its spec sheet. If you can't find one, treat the "airsoft rated" language as a marketing claim, not a certification.
