10 Helldivers 2 Facts We Learned While Building the B-01 Helmet

By the ANVIL0 Workshop·5 min read

We didn't plan on becoming Helldivers 2 people. It happened because enough customers kept asking whether we could build a B-01 Tactical helmet, and somewhere around the fifth request we gave in, ordered the actual game, and started playing it just to get the proportions right. A few hundred hours later, here we are: a finished B-01 Tactical Helmet in the shop (also listed on our Etsy for anyone who prefers ordering there), and a list of things about the game that kept surprising us while we built it.

Some of this we half-knew already from playing. The rest we only found chasing dev interviews and sales numbers while writing this post. All of it made the build feel less like a random side project and more like we'd picked the right game to get obsessed with.

The engine behind it was basically written off

Helldivers 2 runs on tech inherited from the original 2015 game, and by the studio's own account it was treated as legacy for most of a decade - tolerated rather than loved. Nobody was fully convinced it could carry a modern third-person shooter with destructible terrain and this many effects running at once. It did. Sometimes the "outdated" engine turns out to be the one thing nobody has to rewrite under pressure.

Sony expected a cult hit. They got PlayStation's fastest-selling PC release ever

The internal expectation going in was an audience roughly the size of the original game's - devoted, but small. What actually happened: Helldivers 2 became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title on PC in the platform's history, outselling names like Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam. Combined sales across platforms sit at roughly 20 million copies - about 13.1 million on Steam, 5.6 million on PS5, and 1.6 million on Xbox Series X|S since the console release. Forbes covered how it pulled that off shortly after launch.

The playerbase briefly broke the servers, and beat GTA 5's record doing it

On February 19, 2024, Helldivers 2 hit 411,359 concurrent players on Steam - higher than GTA 5's all-time peak of 354,548, and higher than Starfield's 330,723. Arrowhead had to manually cap connections at 450,000 just so the servers didn't buckle under that many people dropping in at once. TechRadar has the full numbers if you want to see how it compares to other Steam records.

Three enemy factions, three completely different problems

Terminids, Automatons, and Illuminate aren't the same AI in different skins. Terminids want wide-area damage and fast rotations. Automatons punish you for standing in the open. Illuminate lean on stealth and mind control, so half the fight is noticing what's happening to your squad before it's too late. No single loadout cheeses all three, which is presumably the point.

The Warhammer 40K crossover is a genuine love letter, not a licensing afterthought

Game director Mikael Eriksson and much of the Arrowhead team have talked for years about being Warhammer fans first, Helldivers developers second. That turned into an actual collaboration: on August 12, 2026, the "Castellan's Creed" warbond arrived, built around the 40K universe. Instead of the obvious pick of Space Marines, the studio went with Cadian Kasrkin - ordinary Imperial Guard troopers - arguing they're a closer match for "a regular soldier with a gun against the entire universe" than a genetically-engineered supersoldier would be. The set adds the R/40-K marksman rifle, the P/40-K bolt pistol, the 40-K meltagun stratagem, and armor styled after the Imperium. Xbox's own announcement has the full rundown of what's in it.

The in-game propaganda machine got hijacked once - and the hijackers played along

Managed Democracy isn't just a punchline between missions - it's a full in-universe system built in the spirit of Starship Troopers and RoboCop, complete with mandatory optimism and zero acknowledgment of setbacks. When Arrowhead's own social accounts got hacked, reportedly by the in-game Cyborg faction, the hackers didn't post something random. They recreated the game's propaganda-style intro almost shot for shot, just with humans cast as the villains being wiped out by "innocent" robots. It was close enough to the real thing that part of the community assumed it was an official teaser.

Major Orders actually move the war map

Easy to underestimate until you've watched a countdown tick down with your own squad. The combined actions of millions of players decide which planets stay under Super Earth's control, which stratagems unlock for everyone, and which factions gain or lose ground. That's why losing a planet gets treated like a real event - memes, informal "mourning days," genuine tension as the clock runs out.

There are at least 18 hidden references buried in the game

Between nods to Starship Troopers and Aliens and winks at older sci-fi shooters, there are enough easter eggs - in textures, voice lines, and stratagem names - that fan wikis keep dedicated, regularly updated lists just to track them.

It's also picked up real industry recognition

Past the in-universe satire, Helldivers 2 earned actual nominations and wins for Best Action Game and Best Co-Op Game at several major ceremonies after its 2024 release - a rare result for a humor-first live-service title going up against single-player blockbusters.

The first game spent nine years in development, which explains a lot

The original 2015 Helldivers took nearly a decade to find its audience as a cult top-down co-op shooter. By the time Arrowhead rebuilt the concept in 3D for the sequel, they'd already spent years refining the exact formula - dark humor, friendly fire, the last-second panic before extraction - that makes the whole thing work. The sequel doesn't feel like a shooter that accidentally went viral. It feels like something built on a decade of knowing exactly what it wanted to be.

None of it made the helmet build easier, technically - the visor geometry alone took a few tries to get right. But it's the kind of background that makes a build feel worth doing properly. If you want to see how ours turned out, the B-01 Tactical Helmet is live in the shop now, with the same listing also up on Etsy for anyone who'd rather order through there.
